TEACHING/FACULTY EXPERIENCE

  •  2018 College Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, Summer Opera Studio. Will serve as instructor and coach for the opera scenes and opera productions.
  • 2017 Opera San Jose Young Artists Program. Served as a coach and a music director for the opera scenes. I will also be instructing the collaborative pianists for the opera scenes. 
  • 2016 San Jose State University. Served as an artist-in-residence and gave a public master class.
  • 2016 Opera San José Summer Young Artists Program. Served as a coach and a music director for the opera scenes. Also gave a public master class in “The Art of German Lied.”

  • 2015 Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisconsin. Spent three days as an Artist in Residence. Gave a public master class for the graduate voice and opera students and also gave private coaching sessions for the voice and the collaborative piano students.
  • 2015 Merola Young Artists Program, San Francisco Opera, San Francisco, California. Coached the young artists and conducted two concerts of The Schwabacher Summer Concert with the San Francisco Opera Orchestra. Also gave a public master class.
  • 2015 National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), Greater Philadelphia Chapter. Gave a master class called “Spring Audition Workshop.” 
  • 2014 Queens College, City University of New York, Aaron Copland School of Music. Gave a master class for the members of the Queens College Opera Studio.
  • 2014 ISing International Festival, Suzhou, China. Faculty member and conductor for this international young artists festival. Actively recruited Chinese and European young singers for Temple University.
  • 2013 National Opera Association 58th Annual Convention, Portland, Oregon: Gave two master classes on working with a conductor and stage director.
  • 2013 University of California, Santa Barbara. Gave a master class for members of the Opera Department.
  • 2013 University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music, Los Angeles, California. Gave a master class for the graduate opera students.
  • 2013 Faculty Member, Opera Intensive, Los Angeles, California. Gave master classes and coaching to professional and pre-professional singers.

  • 2011 Presenter, Classical Singer Convention, Los Angeles. Gave a joint master class with Dr. Victoria Hart on how to translate coaching comments into usable technique, in other words, how to do what your coach, conductor, or music director is asking of the singer.
  • 2010 Artistic Director, Sisak International Voices Festival, Sisak, Croatia. Gave performances, master classes and seminars for young professional singers from the Balkan area during this two-week festival.
  • 2010 Conductor and Coach, Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute (BASOTI), San Francisco, California. Duties include preparing singers and conducting a full opera production for this intensive, professional-level opera training program.
  • 2007 Classical Singers Association Convention, San Francisco, California. Gave a lecture and master class on working with a conductor.
  • 2003 Visiting Conductor, Pepperdine University, Malibu, California. Prepared University singers and orchestra and conducted performances of Mozart’s The Abduction from the Seraglio.
  • 2012 - 2013 Advised Temple Opera students Elise Mark, Gabriel Rebolla, Gilad Arnon, Pei-ju Yu, Patricia Vigil on summer programs, career guidance, and post-graduate, residence, and young artist programs.
  • 2013 - 2014 Advised Temple Opera students Pei-ju Yu, Kat Bowman, Gabriel Rebolla, in career guidance. Supervised choral conducting student Nathan Lofton as assistant conductor and chorus master for the spring opera Orfeo ed Euridice.
  • 2014-2015 Advised Temple Opera students Joowon Chae and Kimberly Oppelt in career guidance. Also advised the graduate pianists Kat Bowman and Timur Mustakimov. Developed the structure of the Graduate Opera Workshop to include the seminars on Career Advisement, Audition Techniques, Dance, Movement, and Stage Combat with specialist guest instructors. Also brought a heavier emphasis on the development of acting techniques during the fall semester.

  • 2007- 2011 Coach-in-Residence, Los Angeles Opera Young Artists Program. Prepared members of this prestigious program for performances with the Company.

  • 2016 Adjudicator, National Opera Association, 62nd Annual Convention, Carolyn Bailey Dominick Argento Vocal Competition, Scholarship Division. 
  • 2015 Adjudicator , The Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Northwest Region, Portland, Oregon. 2015  Prepared and directed the first development/workshop for “B-Cell-City,” an international, multi-media opera project co-sponsored by Dr. Antonio Giordano of Cancer Institute at Temple University and the Office of the Provost.
  • 2013 Presenter, National Opera Association, 58th Annual Convention, Portland, Oregon. Presented two master classes, working together with a stage director, and was a judge of the Collegiate Opera Scenes Competition.
  • 2012 Interviewed extensively for the book, The Musical Theater of Stephen Schwartz, published by Rowman & Littlefield, 2014. Interview covered my work with Stephen Schwartz as he wrote and I conducted the world premiere of his first opera, Séance on a Wet Afternoon.

  • 1999 – 2010  Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Opera Santa Barbara. Supervised and directed all artistic matters for this professional regional opera company, including conducting two productions per year. Was responsible for hiring of artistic and production staff, auditioning and hiring singers, and orchestra. Participated in contract negotiations for orchestra. Oversaw all aspects of day-to-day functioning of the company, from fundraising to educational and community outreach. Engaged in frequent and regular contact with board members, guild members and committees. Assisted with identifying and recruiting new board members. Was responsible for long-range artistic planning for the company. Was responsible for preparing production budgets for the financial committee of the board. Oversaw production spending. Was responsible for organizing and frequently participating in outreach events for the community and schools. 
  • 2010   Music Director, Sisak International Music Festival, Croatia. Played concerts, led seminars and master classes, and developed curriculum for this program for pre-professional Croatian singers.
  • 2005 - 2011  Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Greensboro Opera. Was responsible for all artistic matters relating to productions, including selection of singers, directors, designers and production staff. Conducted the yearly opera production, advised on smaller, secondary production produced in conjunction with the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.

  • 1998 Accompanied internationally known soprano Ljuba Kazarnovskaya in a recital of Tchaikovsky songs at the Danny Kaye Recital Hall, Hunter College, New York City.
  • 1997 Accompanied internationally renown mezzo-soprano Irina Mishura on her debut recording “In the Silence of the Night,” produced and distributed by VAI Recordings. Repertoire included songs by Tchaikovksy, Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich. Premiere recording of the original piano version of the Shostakovich Tsvetayeva Songs.  Wrote English translation of the Russian poetry included in the CD booklet.
  • 1984 - 1986 Studio Accompanist, The Juilliard School, New York City. Played for students of faculty members in classes and in recitals. Faculty members included Beverly Johnson, Oren Brown, Paul Sperry and Daniel Ferro.
  • 1987 - 1989 Regular recitals with singers and instrumentalists in New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, including recitals at Carnegie Recital Hall (now Weill Hall) with Cantor Michael Manevich, Marian Thompson, Voice Faculty Member, Mannes College of Music, Winterreise with baritone Franz Mousson, violinist Gary Ronkin. 
  • 1999 - 2001 Accompanied contralto Victoria Hart in a number of recitals in various venues in the Santa Barbara area, including a lecture-recital at the Thacher School, Ojai, California, and at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Repertoire included Brahms’ Vier ernste Gesänge, Mahler Rückert Lieder, Seite Canciones Populares of de Falla, Wesendonck Lieder, songs by Fauré, Copland, and others.
